Dear Queens College Photographic Society,
I just thought that I'd let you know about a forthcoming lecture by the
acclaimed professional photojournalist and photographic artist Nick
Cobbing (www.nickcobbing.co.uk). I am co-convenor of the Cultures of
Climate Change research group at CRASSH (the Centre for Research in the
Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities) - we meet on alternate Monday
evenings for talks by artists and academics on the subject of
representing climate change through art.
I feel sure that this lecture will be of great interest to many of your
members. The event is free, and open to those outside the university as
well as within it. This will be a fascinating insight into the working
practices of a professional photojournalist, and the role of the
photographer in raising awareness of this critical issue. I have
summarised below the important information - I would be very grateful if
you could circulate this information to your members, and to any other
groups/individuals that you think would be interested. We hope to see
many of you there.
Many thanks,
Bradon Smith

Monday 28 January 2008, 5-6.30pm.

The "Cultures of Climate Change" group is delighted to welcome Nick
Cobbing for the first session of this term. Nick is an acclaimed
photojournalist and photographic artist whose work "focuses on the
landscape, people's relationship to it and to each other". He has just
returned from the recent Cape Farewell expedition to Greenland
(www.capefarewell.com), one of his photos from which was chosen by TIME
magazine in their Pictures of the Year 2007. His work "Surface Tension"
- stunning photographs of the Greenland ice-cap from the air - has won
two major awards and was widely published. Nick will present a slide
show of his photographs and talk about his experiences documenting the
process of climate change through photography.
Nick's lecture will last approximately 40 minutes, allowing plenty of
time for questions, and for an informal wine reception. The event is
free and open to all. We look forward to see many of you there.
