In the OmniIDL with 2.5.0 on AIX it seems that ^M (carriage return) characters are not treated as white space as one might expect. The standard is strangely unclear on the lexical status of carriage return, but it seems like it would be useful to treat it as white space so that IDL brought over from the PC world to Unix will work properly.
