Dear Queens' Photographers,
Sorry to only write to you at this advanced stage of the year! For all of
you who don't know, Queens' is incredibly lucky and one of the only colleges
to have a fully functional darkroom, and as I'm running it this year, I'd
like to let you know what is going on with that wonderful little room in the
Docket basement.
The main problem that many people have with darkrooms (including myself!) is
that people find them very interesting but do not really know how to use
them properly, if at all. That's where I'm planning to change things! The
Society has finally managed to find an experienced photographer who is
willing to hold TUTORIALS AND PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS IN DARKROOM TECHNIQUES for
all those willing to learn basic and more advanced techniques to do with the
developing, processing and finishing of black and white photography!!! Iain
Parker is an experienced photographer who has been working in the field for
many years, having accumulated a great wealth of experience and works
part-time at Jessops.
We'd like to get these up and running as soon as possible, so it would be
really great if I could get a rough number of people who would be interested
in attending the darkroom workshops. Ideally, I would like a rough idea of
numbers by the end of the weekend so that we can work out how many groups
and sessions we will need and how many hours we'll need to get Iain in for.
If you are interested, please send me an email (jg520) as soon as you can
and I'll get back to you ASAP with possible times and dates for the
workshops. The more interest we have, the more techniques we can learn about
so even if you've never considered using a darkroom, please consider giving
it a go! It is a skill that's dying out and can be really interesting to
engage in and extremely rewarding (as well as a nice thing to do on a cold
evening).
On a separate note, if there is anyone who has used a darkroom before or
wants to have a look at our facilities, let me know and I can put you on the
list so that the Porters will allow you to sign the key out. Beginners might
have to get a bit of a safety talk from me (boring, I know!) but College
demands it!
Hoping to hear from you soon,
Julian
