Hi all,
Two people have put their names forward for consideration as president: Rob Leadbetter and William Chen. The voting system will work like this: Photography Society members can either email me directly with their vote, or, if you would prefer to vote anonymously, you can put a note in my pigeonhole with the name of your chosen candidate on it and then email me to tell me that's what you've done. Voting starts NOW and will close at midnight on Friday. Votes will be counted on Saturday morning and the president announced on Saturday afternoon.
Here are the candidates!
1. ROB LEADBETTER
I've been working to organise the latest exhibition for PhotSoc (plus thinking up catchy new abbreviations); having liaised with the college authorities in order to allow us to use the Buttery and negotiating the costs of printing with local companies. It's also been a longer-term project of mine to organise getting an expert into Queens' to teach anyone who is interested how to use our (woefully underused) darkroom facilities. This involved persuading the JCR to add to our budget as well as finding a willing teacher, and so gave me some experience of the process of applying for funding. The good news is that there should be sessions starting next Michaelmas, when exams seem like they were just a distant dream and everyone can get on with that which is most important to them in life: photography.
In terms of vision for the future, if the darkroom classes turn out to be a success, I was thinking that we could also get classes in methods of taking photos. Some expert advice on photo composition, and how to get the exact effects that you want from a camera could be beneficial. I want to make the society a resource for people to learn about photography instead of being just another common interest group in Cambridge. And, of course, more trips! I have had some ideas about local places of interest that may be worth photographing: Royston cave (http://www.roystoncave.co.uk/index.html), the Botanic garden, the Gog Magog hills, the Fitz (if we can persuade them to allow piccies), as well as the other myriad of museums we have in Cambridge like the zoology one and the Whipple.
2. WILLIAM CHEN
My name is William Chen, I am currently in third year reading engineering. I was last year's queens' table tennis team captain and has a strong passion about street photography, I use both film and digital equipments and i am also a antique camera collector. I spend most of vacations travelling around different countries, documenting different culture environments and landscapes. Two of my recent landscape photos were selected for display by the current committee for display in the college hall this year.
Queens is a lucky college to have its own dark room and its own photographic society. There are always people who loves photography and almost everyone takes pictures, but under busy cambridge terms, most people are not having as much time as they would like to precipitate in the society activity, So If I have the honour to take the position, I would try to organise activities that are interesting yet not time consuming, eg short one hour session on friday or saturday nights. and I think the dark room sessions proposed this year are very interesting. I would also sending out short articles and interesting photographic webpages to members weekly. Also more experienced members could also run sessions to help starters understanding key concepts such as framing, depth of field, difference between shooting portraits using macro lens and telephoto lens, etc. I think a lot of people will be interested.

Happy voting!
Charlotte xx
