I use a 64bit Solaris 9 build of 4.0.4 with no problems.
The compilers are sun CC/cc v5.5

This was the input to configure used:

../../configure CC=cc -g -xarch=v9a CXX=CC -g -xarch=v9a \
PYTHON=/proj/mp/cots/python2.3.3/build/sparc64/bin/python \
--prefix=/proj/mp/cots/omniORB-4.0.4/build/sparc64 \
-exec-prefix=/proj/mp/cots/omniORB-4.0.4/build/sparc64 \
CPPFLAGS=-I/proj/mp/cots/python-2.3.3/build/sparc64/include \
LDFLAGS=-L/proj/mp/cots/python-2.3.3/build/sparc64/lib
