[omniORB] How to check whether a server is running?

Couldn't it call a function on the server?
If it's down it will fail.

Let's suppose a server died for some reason and left
behind IOR string in a file. Now, if a new client
reads that IOR string and narrows it to the type of
the server, how can it be checked whether the server
is still running?
