   There is a hint in the first line of the file itself.
Try:
	/bin/patch -p0 < patches/aix_xlC_5.0.patch

Actually, it might be helpful if there were some brave volunteers
out there who wanted to try applying this patch on a non-AIX/VACPP5
platform and see if it works. It should be portable, in fact more
portable that the existing version, but it does shuffle a lot of
code around, and our friends in Cambridge didn't want to make such
a large change without testing it everywhere first.
