Hi,
from a very practical point of view there is another dirty =
reason to parse IORs, e.g. avoiding (possibly) long applications startup =
time by trying to ping remote objects (usually factories) *before* the =
ORB is involved at all. This is especially useful for local nets, where =
there are no reasons to expect delays because of routing and a short =
reasonable timeout can be set. So dead hosts or hosts with no listening =
servers at expected ports can be detected in advance without the =
somewhat long time the TCP stack forces us to wait. And with a number of =
such hosts being down this time can be very disappointing.
Quick and dirty, but very useful from the end-user feeling point of =
view.
Bye,
                                             Renzo Tomaselli =20
