About GIOP/IIOP

I got a question about GIOP/IIOP:

Are GIOP/IIOP message formats  self-describing message packets?

In other words, how does an object adapter unpack the massage received?
For example, how to *recognize* the GIOP header? You know, only by GIOP
header client or server can understand which message format(0~6) is
contained. So who define the bytes order of GIOP header?

Moreover, are type codes only be used when packing/unpacking
pseudo-objects?
